SEVILLE, Fla. — A 28-year-old Seville man was arrested early Monday after an hours-long standoff with Volusia County deputies near Lake Juanita and Raulerson roads.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, a deputy went to the home Sunday night to conduct a well-being check on Austin L. Mowery. Deputies said the encounter escalated when Mowery allegedly pointed a shotgun through a window at the deputy. The deputy was not injured.
The incident prompted a large law-enforcement response that included the sheriff’s Mobile Command unit, an armored vehicle and two helicopters that alternated over the area for several hours. Nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place.
Mowery surrendered at approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday. Volusia County jail records show he was booked into the Branch Jail at 6:11 a.m. on one count of aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer under Florida Statute 784.07(2)(c).
The booking record lists no bond. The arrest case number is VP260016610.
Although the incident was initially described in some reports as a deputy-involved shooting, currently available information does not indicate that either Mowery or the deputy fired a weapon.
Mowery is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
