2008 Volusia Sheriff Records Detail Mark Sias Internal Investigation and 40-Hour Suspension
A 29-page public-records packet documents disciplinary actions involving former Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mark Sias, including a written reprimand and an internal investigation that led to notice of a 40-hour suspension.
Written reprimand over a delayed report
The packet includes an employee performance notice and a July 2008 letter of reprimand tied to a January 2008 call. The agency said Sias failed to submit a required report despite repeated requests and reminders. The document identifies violations involving submission of reports and failure to follow a directive or order, and states that a written reprimand would become part of his personnel file.
Internal investigation 08-014
A September 22, 2008 notice advised Sias that he was the subject of an internal investigation. The listed issues included processing property and evidence, repeated performance problems, inattention to duties, absence from duty without proper notification, failure to follow a directive or order and submission of reports and documents.
The agency’s October 23, 2008 notice of intent to suspend describes several events. Among them, it says Sias volunteered for an overtime shift and did not report for it; handled found keys without completing a property report; failed to complete or supplement reports and evidence entries after a juvenile battery call; and damaged a county vehicle after attempting to leave a ditch. The letter states that Sias accepted responsibility for several actions during his sworn statement.
Proposed discipline
The notice lists earlier sustained disciplinary matters and says the sheriff intended to suspend Sias without pay for forty hours. It also warned that similar future conduct could lead to more severe administrative action, including dismissal. The packet is presented below so readers can examine the allegations, agency findings, correspondence and signatures directly.
